So, what is an unconference anyway?

An unconference is a participant-driven gathering. Meaning, the agenda and topics of discussion are created by the attendees, rather than the organisers. Unconferences are designed to promote collaboration, interaction and connection among the folks who attend.

An unconference is like the laid-back cousin of traditional conferences. Think, less formalities and more collaboration. Less speakers talking at the participants, and more discussion and connection amongst the participants.

The atmosphere is friendly, interactive, and flexible. Attendees are encouraged to move around, jump into conversations that catch your eye, and share your own thoughts. It's all about breaking down barriers, fostering open dialogue, and creating a space where everyone's voice can be heard.

In an unconference, learning is a two-way street, and you'll likely leave with new insights, connections, and maybe even a few laughs. So, if you're tired of the same old conference routine, an unconference might be just the refreshing change you've been looking for!

How will the AllyShift unconference work?

Sometimes unconference agendas are formed on the fly on the day, in other cases unconferences have an open agenda submission for folks to get involved with online before the day. We’re going down the “unconference-style” route…

  • Once you register for AllyShift, you’ll be redirected to submit topics that you would like to see discussed at AllyShift, including nominating folks you think should speak at or facilitate a session (you can nominate yourself!)

The AllyShift team will review and collate the submitted topics - so far we’re already seeing some consistent and exciting themes 🤩

We’ll announce the full programme a couple of weeks before AllyShift including the discussion topic sessions

  • We’ll have a combination of keynote speakers and discussion sessions

Building connections and having deeper conversations is a focus of ours at AllyShift, so the programme will be designed to allow for plenty of structured and unstructured conversation time

The discussion sessions will form around the above topics

Facilitation is key! To ensure everyone gets equal opportunity to engage as much as they like, we will have dedicated facilitators in each breakout room to help guide the discussion

Notes will be kept in each breakout session which will be available to all participants

  • This is just the beginning! What happens next depends on the conversations on the day - is a working group needed? An action plan to be created? Someone to engage with who wasn’t there? Learnings to take back to our organisations or communities? Connections formed that can support each other?

Whatever the case, we believe AllyShift will be a launchpad for deeper, braver actions on equitable culture.

How do I submit a topic?

After registering for AllyShift, you’ll be invited to submit topics that you would like to see discussed at AllyShift, including nominating folks you think should speak at or facilitate a session (you can nominate yourself!)

OR if you want to propose a topic now - email us at contact@allyskills.nz!

How can I facilitate a session or speak at AllyShift?

Yay! We’re so glad you’re keen. Breakout discussion facilitators will be AllyShift attendees so please go ahead and register regardless. We will be identifying facilitators prior to the day, once the topics have been finalised. We will be asking people with subject matter expertise and/or facilitation experience. If you’d like to be considered please let us know!

We have limited speaker slots so don’t currently have open submissions, but we’re also keen to know about potential speakers so contact us at contact@allyskills.nz
